SUMMARY:Data Hub Teach In: Resources Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO’s Data Hub for a virtual webinar on October 8th to learn about our many resources that can be used to learn more about the Puerto Rican Community and support your research. \n\n\n\nCENTRO’s Data Hub generates robust research and analysis using publicly available data\, like the U.S. Census Bureau and other federal agencies\, to provide information to the press\, scholars\, policy makers\, and the general public. Our interactive reports use data visualization tools and web maps to illustrate major changes within the Puerto Rican population and are an important resource demonstrating the impacts of many social issues\, policy changes\, and more on the Puerto Rican Community. In recent years\, the data hub has extended research priorities to Puerto Rico’s ongoing economic crisis and post-disaster recovery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMissed this event? SUMMARY:Library & Archives Lunch Hour: Celebrating Carmen Pabón - La Madrina de Loisaida
DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO Archivist\, Herbert Durán\, and Gabriela Sanchez\, board member and volunteer at the Carmen Pabón del Amanecer Jardín\, as they explore the Carmen Pabón del Amanacer Jardín Collection housed at our Library & Archives. Carmen Pabón\, dubbed “La Madrina de Loisaida”\, was a community leader who transformed a vacant lot into a community garden\, with the intention of creating a leisure space for children and older adults. The garden\, named El Bello Amanecer Borinqueño Garden\, provided food\, clothing\, and support for the unhoused of New York City. In the evenings\, the garden would become a hub for activism and poetry. Mayor Rudy Guiliani would eventually sell the garden to a private developer in 1999 but that did not stop Pabón’s activism\, she continued to advocate for other L.E.S staples such as St. Brigid Church in 2008. In 2016\, El Bello Amanecer Boriqueño re-opened under a new moniker\, “Carmen Pabón del Amanecer Jardín.” Pabón passed away just a few weeks after the ribbon cutting ceremony. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Carmen Pabón by Marlis Momber for Loisaida Magazine \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMissed the event? SUMMARY:Afternoon Tertulia: “La familia Farallón” - Exploring the Spring 2024 Journal on Bernardo Vega
DESCRIPTION:Join moderator Gustavo Quintero and panelists Virginia Sánchez Korrol\, Malena Rodríguez-Castro\, Molly Crabapple\, and Ángel “Monxo” López-Santiago virtually on September 3rd as they discuss the Spring 2024 CENTRO Journal on Bernardo Vega’s manuscript “La familia Farallón.” \n\n\n\nDiscovered in 2011 and donated to Centro de Investigaciones Históricas (CIH) at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras\, Vega’s manuscript was originally the source for Memorias de Bernardo Vega: contribución a la historia de la comunidad puertorriqueña en Nueva York (1977)\, edited by César Andreu Iglesias. This issue continues the comparative study of Vega’s original text and its edited version\, exploring a century-long Puerto Rican diasporic history\, focusing on experiences in New York from 1916-1947 and Vega’s later political activities in Puerto Rico while emphasizing collective struggles\, community building efforts\, and the many achievements of Puerto Rican migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Molly Crabapple “Portrait of Bernardo Vega”\, 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMissed the event? SUMMARY:Partner Event: Kevin Quiles Bonilla: A small patch of sand\, yet it holds so much
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibition of photographs by Puerto Rican artist Kevin Quiles Bonilla at Baxter St. at the Camera Club of New York. “A small patch of sand\, yet it holds so much” is curated by Ezra Benus\, Baxter St’s 2023 Guest Curatorial Initiative Recipient. The presentation explores themes of colonialism and diaspora through photographic installations in which the artist and curator invite audiences to consider the role of colonialism in perpetuating debility and disablement.\n\nAs an artist living between San Juan and New York\, Quiles Bonilla’s works focus specifically on the Puerto Rican diaspora. Puerto Rico’s long history of colonization and its current realities as a U.S. colony are explored through artifacts of both fractured everyday life and a thriving tourism industry. Blue FEMA tarps appear throughout the photographs\, emblematic of the post-Hurricane Maria relief that never materialized. Alongside these\, symbols of tourism appear\, such as custom beach towels\, beach sling chairs\, and souvenirs. Works point to the effects of colonial presence and neglect\, and the forces of colonialism are exposed for their role in creating a Puerto Rican diaspora and otherness.

SUMMARY:The Sounds of the Archives: Compositions Inspired by the CENTRO Archives Collections
DESCRIPTION:Our Archives are an incredible source of inspiration\, not just for scholarly research but also for artists of all disciplines. Recently\, two composers: our Artist in Residence\, Gabriel Bouche Caro and Guarionex Morales Matos\, produced two contemporary compositions based on their research. Join us on May 30th for a very special musical performance and witness the rebirth of archived sounds into innovative musical arrangements. \n\n\n\nGabriel Bouche Caro’s piece is a new performance for solo instrument and narrator/singer. It resembles a stream-of-consciousness/musical theater monologue with the vocalist representing the complexities of the Puerto Rican identity and current situation. The performance’s narrative is constructed by taking highly specific texts from the collections of Tato Laviera\, Victor Hernandez Cruz\, Pura Belpre\, and more and making them into a dramatic reading that brings forth conflicts within the ‘diasporican’ identity\, the duality of being a nationalist living in the colonizer’s land\, and the image of an artist who wishes to bring forth the intricacies and beauty of their culture to the world. This is Puerto Rican music\, not as folk\, but as a synthesis of sound\, experience\, tradition\, difficulties\, and successes that come from living life square-rooted in a richly complex and demanding cultural situation.  \n\n\n\nGuarionex Morales Matos’ project\, Pedro Pietri: An Aesthetic Collision Between His Poetry and Puerto Rican Art Song explores the exclusion of diasporic poets from the Puerto Rican art song genre through the work of Pedro Pietri. Pietri’s poetry constitutes the perfect compositional material for this genre\, despite the euro-centrical criteria that have historically marked the latter’s development and approach towards the public. Morales Matos strives to transgress said conventionalisms to crumble the artificial barriers between art forms\, as well as those that divide the popular\, folk\, and classical music spheres. The lyrics and music will derive from three of Pietri’s least-known texts to create a powerful triptych for mezzo-soprano\, clarinet\, and piano. \n\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by NALAC: National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Image: Sheet music for performance of “Perez y Martina”\, Pural Belpré Papers. SUMMARY:Cafecito con... Marisel Moreno: Crossing Waters
DESCRIPTION:Join Marisel Moreno\, award-winning author of the book Crossing Waters: Undocumented Migration in Hispanophone Caribbean and Latinx Literature & Art\, and Dr. Yomaira Figueroa-Vásquez\, CENTRO Directora\, for a cafecito as they reconsider the traditional understanding of borders\, migration and Puerto Rico’s unique position in the migration narrative. \n\n\n\nDebates over the undocumented migration of Latin Americans invariably focus on the southern US border\, but most migrants never cross that arbitrary line. Instead\, many travel\, via water\, among the Caribbean islands. The first study to examine literary and artistic representations of undocumented migration within the Hispanophone Caribbean\, Crossing Waters relates a journey that remains silenced and largely unknown. \n\n\n\nCrossing Waters\, which has received the 2023 Honorable Mention\, Isis Duarte Book Prize in the Haiti/Dominican Republic section (LASA)\, and the prestigious 2023 Gordon K. and Sybil Lewis Book Award from the Caribbean Studies Association\, can be purchased from the University of Texas Press here: https://utpress.utexas.edu/9781477325605/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you miss this event? SUMMARY:Partner Event: ¡Oye! Puerto Rican Theater Breaks Through: Exhibit Opening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The 1970s marked a turning point in the history of Puerto Rican theater in New York City. A vibrant arts scene of Puerto Rican playwrights\, poets\, and actors emerged\, one that traversed the boroughs and neighborhoods of the city and influenced audiences from all cultural backgrounds. Groundbreaking\, contemporary works of art that focused on the stories of Puerto Ricans in New York City proliferated. Incisive plays\, such as Miguel Piñero’s Short Eyes and Eduardo Gallardo’s Simpson Street\, debuted\, and artist spaces\, like the now famed Nuyorican Poets’ Café\, were born and nurtured.\n \n\nThis marked a sharp distinction from the previous generation. In the 1950s\, during a post-war wave of migration from Puerto Rico to New York\, newly transplanted Puerto Rican artists were creating works that reflected life on their native island. Productions by and about Puerto Ricans focused on the stories of those Caribbean communities from their homeland. Two decades later\, a new perspective infused the plays and poetry by and about Puerto Ricans\, one that embraced the identity of Puerto Rican New Yorkers\, “Nuyoricans”\, and focused on the dynamics of life on the mainland for citizens from the island. This shift brought new artistic innovation and a thriving artistic community.\n\n\nJoin us as we explore the history of Puerto Rican theater in New York City in a conversation with leading artists and scholars\, in tandem with the new archives exhibit\, ¡Oye! Puerto Rican Theater Breaks Through\, on view in David Geffen Hall.\n\n \n\nModerator: Dr. Yomaira Figueroa-Vásquez (Director\, Center for Puerto Rican Studies/Hunter College)\n\nPanelists:\nDr. Karen Jaime (Associate Professor of Performing and Media Arts and Latina/o Studies\, Cornell University)\nCaridad de la Luz (Executive Director\, Nuyorican Poets Cafe)\nDr. Virginia Sánchez Korrol (Professor Emerita\, Department of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies\, Brooklyn College)

SUMMARY:Partner Event: Bach to Borikén
DESCRIPTION:English:\nGuitarist José Gabriel Maldonado Suárez presents a concert that blends baroque and 19th-century classical guitar sonatas for guitar and piano\, coupled with 20th-century songs and danzas from Puerto Rico. Maldonado will perform using a replica of Johann Georg Stauffer’s (1778 – 1853) Viennese guitar\, to interpret works by JS Bach (1685-1750) and Ferdinando Carulli (1770-1841) alongside pianist Dr. Weiwei Zhai. The solo repertoire features compositions by Puerto Rican composers\, including songs by Rafael Hernandéz (1892-1965) and Juan Sorroche (b. 1947)\, as well as three Danzas by Lenardo Egúrbida (1945 – 2022). Maldonado will showcase these pieces using a guitar crafted by the renowned Puerto Rican luthier\, Fidencio Díaz. This program highlights Maldonado’s training in classical music interpretation and his commitment to promoting Puerto Rican music and culture through his research and performances.\n\nDr. José Maldonado completed his undergraduate studies in musical performance with a concentration in classical guitar at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico.
