SUMMARY:(Partner Event) Radical Sovereignties\, Radical Archives: The Archivo Histórico de Vieques
DESCRIPTION:Vulnerable communities enact sovereignties that decenter the state while strengthening relationships on which survival depends. This panel will delve into such radical praxis through a closer look at archiving and the Archivo Histórico de Vieques. The AHV is a community archive born out of the struggle against the U.S. Navy’s occupation of Vieques\, Puerto Rico (1940s-2003). In the early days\, it aimed to give voice to Viequenses and to counter the silences imposed by colonialism. Today\, the AHV continues to cultivate community-centered stories. Moreover\, it empowers community members to narrate history in their own terms and to\, through such enactment of narrative sovereignty\, chart out Viequense futures. This panel will accordingly address how archiving can be a praxis for narrative sovereignty that enables communities to reclaim their stories\, counteract historical erasures and assert control over their collective memory. Panelists include historians and archivist from the Puerto Rican archipelago and diaspora.

DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO alongside artist Pablo Delano and art historian Laura Katzman of James Madison University on October 24th as they discuss The Museum of the Old Colony\, its themes\, its aesthetics\, and how the exhibition has evolved over time. SUMMARY:(Partner Event) Our Love is a Shady Garden
DESCRIPTION:Yanira Vissepó blends painting\, natural dyes\, block printing and collage in her practice which centers around the study and celebration of the ecosystems between her birthplace in Puerto Rico and adopted home in Tennessee. The naturally dramatic landscape of Puerto Rico’s tropical rainforest and saturated colors in native plant life merge with the striking change of seasons seen in Tennessee\, creating lush and vibrant paintings. Vissepó uses organic materials and natural pigments\, drawing from Japanese printmaking traditions. Both the materials and imagery speak to her long-time interest in herbalism and holistic healing that began as an important means of self-care before manifesting in her artistic practice. Generous swaths of blue\, green and red are created using a stain painting method that add depth and texture to the surface\, with collaged floral and plant images delicately stitched onto the canvas or fabric.

SUMMARY:Library & Archives Lunch Hour: Celebrating Carmen Pabón - La Madrina de Loisaida
DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO Archivist\, Herbert Durán\, and Gabriela Sanchez\, board member and volunteer at the Carmen Pabón del Amanecer Jardín\, as they explore the Carmen Pabón del Amanacer Jardín Collection housed at our Library & Archives. Carmen Pabón\, dubbed “La Madrina de Loisaida”\, was a community leader who transformed a vacant lot into a community garden\, with the intention of creating a leisure space for children and older adults. The garden\, named El Bello Amanecer Borinqueño Garden\, provided food\, clothing\, and support for the unhoused of New York City. In the evenings\, the garden would become a hub for activism and poetry. Mayor Rudy Guiliani would eventually sell the garden to a private developer in 1999 but that did not stop Pabón’s activism\, she continued to advocate for other L.E.S staples such as St. Brigid Church in 2008. In 2016\, El Bello Amanecer Boriqueño re-opened under a new moniker\, “Carmen Pabón del Amanecer Jardín.” Pabón passed away just a few weeks after the ribbon cutting ceremony. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Carmen Pabón by Marlis Momber for Loisaida Magazine \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMissed the event? DESCRIPTION:Join moderator Gustavo Quintero and panelists Virginia Sánchez Korrol\, Malena Rodríguez-Castro\, Molly Crabapple\, and Ángel “Monxo” López-Santiago virtually on September 3rd as they discuss the Spring 2024 CENTRO Journal on Bernardo Vega’s manuscript “La familia Farallón.” \n\n\n\nDiscovered in 2011 and donated to Centro de Investigaciones Históricas (CIH) at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras\, Vega’s manuscript was originally the source for Memorias de Bernardo Vega: contribución a la historia de la comunidad puertorriqueña en Nueva York (1977)\, edited by César Andreu Iglesias. This issue continues the comparative study of Vega’s original text and its edited version\, exploring a century-long Puerto Rican diasporic history\, focusing on experiences in New York from 1916-1947 and Vega’s later political activities in Puerto Rico while emphasizing collective struggles\, community building efforts\, and the many achievements of Puerto Rican migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Molly Crabapple “Portrait of Bernardo Vega”\, 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMissed the event? SUMMARY:Partner Event: Kevin Quiles Bonilla: A small patch of sand\, yet it holds so much
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibition of photographs by Puerto Rican artist Kevin Quiles Bonilla at Baxter St. at the Camera Club of New York. “A small patch of sand\, yet it holds so much” is curated by Ezra Benus\, Baxter St’s 2023 Guest Curatorial Initiative Recipient. The presentation explores themes of colonialism and diaspora through photographic installations in which the artist and curator invite audiences to consider the role of colonialism in perpetuating debility and disablement.\n\nAs an artist living between San Juan and New York\, Quiles Bonilla’s works focus specifically on the Puerto Rican diaspora. Puerto Rico’s long history of colonization and its current realities as a U.S. colony are explored through artifacts of both fractured everyday life and a thriving tourism industry. Blue FEMA tarps appear throughout the photographs\, emblematic of the post-Hurricane Maria relief that never materialized. Alongside these\, symbols of tourism appear\, such as custom beach towels\, beach sling chairs\, and souvenirs. Works point to the effects of colonial presence and neglect\, and the forces of colonialism are exposed for their role in creating a Puerto Rican diaspora and otherness.

Come meet the DSL Fellows and join the CENTRO staff for an exciting week! \n\n\n\nDay One: June 6th\, 2024 \n\n\n\n11:45 AM EST – 12:45 PM EST The Practice of Solidarity: Grassroots Activism in Puerto Rico\nThe multiple ongoing crises in Puerto Rico encompasses a spectrum of challenges\, spanning from instances of femicide to food insecurity\, and environmental degradation. The government has exacerbated these issues by failing to address these compounding issues. In the wake of this\, grassroots community organizations have engaged in radical acts of solidarity as a means to mobilize constructive transformations. Join us in discussing the contours of knowledge and practices of solidarity and grassroots activism. Panelists include members of: Amigxs Del Mar\, Alianza Mujeres Viequense\, La Colectiva Feminista\, and Comedores Sociales. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:45 PM EST – 4:45 PM EST Open Boats\, Public Knowledge: Archival Study\, Storytelling\, & Digital Humanities Research\nJoin the DSL Open Boat Lab research groups\, community fellows\, and affiliates as they present their research to the community. The Open Boat Lab develops community\, story telling\, and curatorial skills. Alford’s latest book\, American Negra\, is a narrative that is part memoir\, part cultural analysis\, where she reflects on growing up in a working-class family from the city of Syracuse\, NY. Join Alford and renowned writer\, Keyaira Kelly\, as they explore American Negra and the expectations and realities of existing as an Afro-Boricua.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay Two: June 7th\, 2024\n\n\n\n1:30 PM EST – 2:30 PM EST Afternoon Tertulia: Communities in Relation: Cultural Work as Radical Praxis\nJoin us for an Afternoon Tertulia featuring NYC and Puerto Rican cultural workers. The film was considered lost for over 80 years\, before a print was located in the PHI/Krypton Collection at UCLA. Photographed\, directed and produced by Puerto Rican film pioneer\, Juan Emilio Viguié\, Romance Tropical tells the story of a young man who discovers a pre-modern tribe on an island and a fortune in pearls\, subsequently falling in love with a beautiful native woman while his upper-class sweetheart waits in the city. The man exploits the island and its assets\, both literally & figuratively\, before returning to the city to marry his sweetheart. \n\n\n\nJoin Dr. Rojo Robles (Assistant Professor at the Black and Latinx Studies Department at Baruch College\, CUNY.)\, Maillim (May) Santiago (PhD candidate in the Cultural Studies program at George Mason University)\, and Pedro Doreste and Dalina Perdomo (DSL’s Manchineel Project) in conversation as we attempt to understand how the film is an allegory for the colonization and exploitation of third world nations. \n\n\n\nThis screening is produced by the DSL’s newest microlab\, the Manchineel Project\, a multimedia & multimethod interrogation of whiteness in Caribbean moving images & aims to create a living syllabus to better understand the intersections of race and cinema in the Caribbean and its diasporas.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5:15 PM EST – 8:30 PM Workshop & Performance led by Proyecto Kokobalé & Closing Party\nKokobalé/Cocobalé is a martial tradition of Afro-Puerto Rican origin that is practiced with sticks or machetes and with the musical accompaniment of the Puerto Rican Bomba\, our oldest musical tradition of African origin. This tradition includes elements of fighting\, music\, dance and rituals. Kokobalé Project is the only cultural-community organization dedicated to the research\, preservation\, development\, promotion and rescue of our ancestral dance/martial art\, Kokobalé/Cocobalé. Join us for a workshop where you can learn the rhythm of Kokobalé and move along with us!
