DESCRIPTION:Taller Boricua presents ALMA: Echoes of the Nuyorican Movement\, an exhibition honoring over five decades of Puerto Rican artistic expression and cultural resistance. Founded in 1969\, Taller Boricua has been a vital hub for Puerto Rican artists in New York\, offering a space for creative freedom and activism. The exhibition showcases key works from the iconic 30th Anniversary Portfolio\, which pairs visual art and poetry by notable Nuyorican artists\, reflecting the intersection of culture\, identity\, and social justice. The portfolio includes work by Rafael Tufiño\, Diogenes Ballester\, Gloria Rodriguez (RoCa)\, Nitza Tufiño\, Fernando Salicrup\, Marcos Dimas\, and Juan Sanchez\, alongside poets Jesús Papoleto Meléndez\, Pedro Pietri\, Tania Niomi\, María Boncher\, Hector Rivera\, y Mariposa (María Teresa Fernández Rosario).\n\nThe exhibition also features new works by current members of the Rafael Tufiño Printshop\, ensuring that the traditions of Puerto Rican printmaking continue to thrive. These contemporary pieces highlight the ongoing relevance of themes like resistance\, identity\, and community\, which have defined the Nuyorican movement for over five decades. Current printshop’s participating printmakers include Minerva Gonzalez Suvidad\, Albert Justiniano\, Betty Cole\, James Cuebas\, Eliezer Berrios\, Carmen Ayala\, Mariana Ayala\, Oliver Ríos\, Felix Plaza\, George Malave\, and Ada Pilar Cruz.\n\nThis exhibition is open through March 30th with an artist talk on March 1st at 2pm. \n\nThis year\, The Latinx Project at New York University has been at the forefront of exploring Nuyorican and Diasporican histories\, with the forthcoming book Nuyorican and Diasporican Visual Art: A Critical Anthology (Duke University Press)\, edited by Arlene Dávila and Yasmin Ramirez\, and their exhibition RicanVisions: Global Ancestralities and Embodied Futures\, (January 31 – May 2) which features the work of 19 contemporary Nuyorican and Diasporican artists. While distinct\, this exhibition at Taller Boricua resonates with The Latinx Project’s efforts to focus on the Diasporican experience. Together\, these initiatives highlight the ongoing evolution and expansion of the Nuyorican identity and art. We invite visitors to attend The Latinx Project’s programming and explore these rich narratives\, gaining complete insight into this moment of reflection and connection and engaging with the evolving futures of the Nuyorican and Diasporican communities.\n\nTaller Boricua Galleries: 1680 Lexington Avenue\, Harlem\, NYC\, New York 10029. SUMMARY:(Partner Event) Black Cinemas in the Caribbean Basin: Expanding the Black Gaze
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Elena Martinez (Modern Languages and Comparative Literature\, Baruch College) and Dr. Rojo Robles (Black and Latino Studies\, Baruch College) for a discussion on the “Black Gaze” as a critical and political act of spectatorship. Often theorized within the context of African American cinema\, the Black Gaze challenges the whiteness of mainstream media\, fostering confrontation\, intimacy\, and accountability in portraying Black lives.\n\nThis event seeks to expand the concept of the Black Gaze beyond the US to the Caribbean basin and Latin America\, examining how affirming Black cinema in the region can provide an Afro-diasporic perspective of its societies and geographies. Key questions include: How can the Black Gaze engage with the visualities of the Caribbean basin? How are Latin American and Caribbean cinemas incorporating—or displacing—Blackness in their narratives? Explore Black cinema’s historical\, cultural\, and aesthetic dimensions and its role in reclaiming agency\, dignity\, and authenticity in storytelling across the diaspora.

SUMMARY:Caudal: Puerto Rican and Dominican Dialogues on Feminism and Queerness
DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO December 13th for a panel discussion and celebration of a very special issue of the Summer 2024 CENTRO Journal\, titled “Caudal: Contemporary Feminist & Queer Perspectives on Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.” This journal focuses on contemporary feminist and queer/cuir perspectives of cultural\, social\, and political phenomena from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and their global diasporas. \n\n\n\nThe writers of this issue “rock the boat” of national insularity to highlight the region’s deep connective tissues. In examining Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic\, this issue refuses to pick from here nor there\, and instead brings together feminist and queer approaches to spotlight our practices of joy\, resistance\, and survival in the face of racist\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, misogynist\, homophobic and transphobic Caribbean politics and maneuvers in the 21st century. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Fue esa la vía\, Helen Ceballos\, 2020. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaribe Cuir [Leisure Space] by Circuito Queer\n\n\n\n3:00 PM – 9:00 PM | Hunter East Harlem Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Hunter East Harlem Gallery opens up a tranquil space to relish on recent depictions of Caribbean cuir lives. Field expert Zaire Dinzey-Flores (Rutgers)\, as invited responders to the issue\, will share their reflections. \n\n\n\nThe space will have a water-themed installations by artist Helen Ceballos. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaudalosxs [the Reception] \n\n\n\n8:00 PM – 9:00 PM | Silberman Lobby\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter delving in the waters of Caudal\, we invite participants to let loose and dance to a performance by the queer and trans salsa band Las Mariquitas over some food and drinks to cheer the night and the semester away. The Hunter East Harlem Gallery will remain open through the night for folks to continue to enjoy the Caribbean Kiki [Lounge Space] and read a bit of the special issue before purchasing your own copy. Within the same space\, immerse yourself in Circuito Queer’s Las Casas de Ballroom\, a 6 part social media series to come out in 2025 about ballroom culture’s family formation on both islands. SUMMARY:Cafecito con… Marisel Vera & Carmen Cruz-Venie
DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO and Hunter College AFPRL Department for an event discussing the themes of colonialism\, relocation\, and the forging of Puerto Rican communities in Hawaii as shown in Marisel Vera’s book\, The Taste of Sugar and Carmen Cruz-Venie’s upcoming documentary Bajari: Honor and Respect. \n\n\n\nThe Taste of Sugar is a novel set in Puerto Rico on the eve of the Spanish-American War. Up in the mountainous region of Utuado\, Vicente Vega and Valentina Sanchez labor to keep their coffee farm from the creditors. When the great San Ciriaco hurricane of 1899 brings devastating upheaval\, the young couple is lured along with thousands of other puertorriqueños to the sugar plantations of Hawaii\, where they are confronted by the hollowness of America’s promises of prosperity. \n\n\n\nBajari: Honor and Respect is the untold story of the Puerto Rican laborers who emigrated to Hawaii to find work and faced many challenges\, including language\, adjustment to a different culture and people in a faraway land. The immigrants worked hard to establish themselves in their communities to make a better life for themselves and their families. Bajari is “a title of distinction and high respect” in the Taino dialect. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMissed the event? Catch the recording here!

SUMMARY:(Partner Event) El taller de Naldi / Naldi's Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Film screening at the International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival on November 17th\, 2024 at 2:00 PM.\n\nLogline: An octogenarian folk-artist uses his paintings to recount Puerto Rican family and life histories to his grandson.\n\nA film by Carlos Rivera Fernandez and Arnaldo Fernandez Cruz\n\nProduced by Películas Viejas Productions for the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology\n\nEl Taller de Naldi is a journey that chronicles a visual history of Puerto Rico\, inspired by the paintings of Arnaldo Fernandez Cruz\, an octogenarian folk artist. Together with his grandson\, filmmaker Carlos\, this painter and director pair become the authors of a narrative that shines a perennial\, memorial light on Arnaldo’s hometown of Cupey. Through a series of testimonies\, ranging from hilarious epithets of his rural youth to unsettling histories from Puerto Rico’s colonial past\, the film captures the essence of the place and its people. Simultaneously\, Arnaldo and Carlos collaborate in a reciprocal creative process\, engaging deeply with each other’s work. By mixing historiography and folklore with an experimental approach to the artist’s craft\, El Taller de Naldi is at once a meditation on the role of art in preserving a national memory\, and an intimate portrait of the personal relationship between a grandfather and his grandson.

From an early age he felt a passion for music\, an inspiration that he has always channeled through the instrument he enjoys the most… the guitar. His father was a simple and humble human being\, with an extraordinary talent for poetry and perhaps it has been that vein that has allowed the development of José Nogueras as an author.\n\nAt the age of eight he came to reside in the city of Rio Piedras where he feels like an adopted son. During his school years\, between the ages of 8 and 16\, he participated in a number of musical groups. At the age of 17 he began his foray into music professionally.\n\nTheir record productions have been characterized by their excellent quality\, both technically and musically. Each of them is framed in a concept\, distinguished by its sensitivity and innovative way of harmonizing the topics.\n\nJosé Nogueras’ music has not only managed to captivate the Puerto Rican public with its contagious rhythm and flavor\, but has also been recognized in other Latin American countries and in the Hispanic sector of the United States.

SUMMARY:La Meriendita: Call Me Roberto
DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO in East Harlem for La Meriendita\, a story hour dedicated to children’s books! This month’s Meriendita is Call Me Roberto\, written by Nathalie Alonso and illustrated by Rudy Gutierrez. \n\n\n\nRoberto Clemente always loved baseball. Growing up in Carolina\, Puerto Rico\, he swung tree branches (since he didn’t have a bat) and hit tin cans. He was always batting\, pitching\, running\, sliding. His dedication paid off when\, at the age of 19\, he was tapped for a major league team. \n\n\n\nAn inspirational story of Major League Baseball player Roberto Clemente—not Bob—who endured years of racism and discrimination to become one of the greatest baseball players of all time. \n\n\n\nBring your little ones by for snacks and a story that celebrates food\, family\, and working together! \n\n\n\nThis event is presented in collaboration with the East Harlem Tutorial Program \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Cover by Rudy Gutierrez

SUMMARY:(Partner Event) Radical Sovereignties\, Radical Archives: The Archivo Histórico de Vieques
DESCRIPTION:Vulnerable communities enact sovereignties that decenter the state while strengthening relationships on which survival depends. This panel will delve into such radical praxis through a closer look at archiving and the Archivo Histórico de Vieques. The AHV is a community archive born out of the struggle against the U.S. Navy’s occupation of Vieques\, Puerto Rico (1940s-2003). In the early days\, it aimed to give voice to Viequenses and to counter the silences imposed by colonialism. Today\, the AHV continues to cultivate community-centered stories. Moreover\, it empowers community members to narrate history in their own terms and to\, through such enactment of narrative sovereignty\, chart out Viequense futures. This panel will accordingly address how archiving can be a praxis for narrative sovereignty that enables communities to reclaim their stories\, counteract historical erasures and assert control over their collective memory. Panelists include historians and archivist from the Puerto Rican archipelago and diaspora.

This ongoing\, site-specific\, conceptual art installation by visual artist Pablo Delano addresses the complex history of Puerto Rico after the Spanish-American War of 1898\, when the Caribbean archipelago was seized by the United States military from Spain as a “possession.” The Museum of the Old Colony has been exhibited nationally and around the world\, from the Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Art at James Madison University—its most extensive presentation in the U.S. to date—to its current iteration at the 2024 Biennale di Venezia\, where it is situated at the heart of Foreigners Everywhere\, the main exhibition of the Biennale that remains on view through November 26\, 2024. An earlier version of the installation forms part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Juan\, Puerto Rico (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Delano by Jeannie Galowitz
