SUMMARY:Diasporican Cultural Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Diasporican Cultural Summit is designed to address the pressing need for gathering spaces that bring together diasporic cultural workers\, fostering connections with the next generation of scholars\, researchers\, and artists. By creating a multidimensional learning environment\, the DCS not only facilitates meaningful exchanges between cultural practitioners and emerging academics but also builds bridges to other organizations. This dynamic platform enables participants to share knowledge\, develop strategies for collaboration\, and strengthen networks\, ensuring that cultural work remains vibrant\, impactful\, and deeply rooted in community engagement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJune 4\, 2025\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeyond Visual Interpretation: A Workshop on Writing About Art\n\n\n\n11:00 AM – 1:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtists from the global majority lack representation in the validating spheres of art: museums\, journals\, and academic dissertations\, among others. When they do appear\, there is a lack of understanding about their lived context and the social and cultural experiences in which their art is rooted. The need for new writing\, both academic and non-academic\, is vitally important to closing the gaps of inequity that affect these communities. In collaboration with the Department of Art and Art History at Hunter College and funded by the Office of the Arts and the Sainsbury initiative\, CENTRO presents an art writing workshop for students\, faculty\, and art and cultural workers. The workshop will take as its starting point the Diasporican Arts in Motion database that Centro has created. \n\n\n\nFacilitated by Daniel R. Quiles\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNetworking for Cultural Workers & Artists\n\n\n\n2:00 PM – 4:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis gathering is designed to foster meaningful connections among professionals\, emerging creatives\, and students in the cultural sector. This is going to be a welcoming space to share experiences\, exchange ideas\, explore opportunities for future partnerships\, gain insights from industry peers\, and discover resources to support your creative and professional journey. \n\n\n\nDon’t forget to add yourself to the Diasporican Cultural Summit Networking Directory! \n\n\n\nModerated by Rosa Cruz and Angel Antonio Ruiz Laboy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfternoon Tertulia: Archival Artistry – A Resident’s Research Experience\n\n\n\n4:30 PM – 6:15 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event offers a unique opportunity to delve into the intersection of artistry and research\, as our panelists share their residency experiences exploring CENTRO’s Library and Archives. Discover how these artists utilized CENTRO’s resources to inform and inspire their creative journeys. The panel will give insight into their thought processes\, highlighting the research methods employed and the transformative ways archival discoveries have shaped their finished works. \n\n\n\nThe conversation will also explore the role of artists as researchers\, emphasizing how the past serves as inspiration for contemporary art. \n\n\n\nModerated by Sabrina Ortiz. Panelists include Dennis Flores\, César Abreu\, Xenia Rubinos\, and Glendalys Medina. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMapping Through DAM: Understanding and Using the Diasporican Art In Motion Initiative + a Special Sneak Peek at the DAM Docuseries\n\n\n\n6:30 PM – 8:30 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith the support of the National Endowment for the Arts\, Centro’s Arts and Culture Unit has created a database of Puerto Rican diasporic artists called Diasporican Art in Motion\, which is also a research and documentation tool. Through this presentation\, attendees will learn how to use and navigate DAM and learn\, firsthand\, about its usefulness for both artists and researchers. Attendees will become familiar with the first phases of the project (profile creation\, work show\, commissions for critical essays and microdocumentaries) with the following stages (digitalization of ephemera\, and mapping project) and its eventual extension to other artistic disciplines. The presentation will be given by Glorimar García\, DAM project manager. \n\n\n\nWe’ve highlighted 10 of these artists in our DAM Docuseries\, and you have the chance to catch a sneak peak of these mini documentaries. After this\, we’ll host a panel with New York based artists and CENTRO’s Arts & Culture team. \n\n\n\nModerated by Glorimar Garcia and Carlos Rivera Fernández. Guests artists include Nora Maité Nieves\, Christopher Lopez\, Rodríguez Calero\, Jorge Luis Rodriguez\, Yanira Castro\, Juanita Lanzó\, María Dominguez\, Manny Vega\, and David Antonio Cruz. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJune 5\, 2025\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArchiving for Cultural Organizations\n\n\n\n1:00 PM – 2:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop explores the critical role of preservation in sustaining the histories and legacies of organizations serving the global majority. Many of these organizations face significant challenges\, including limited resources and the complexities of managing born-digital materials. This event highlights practical strategies for overcoming these barriers and ensuring the longevity of cultural memory through effective archival practices. Facilitated by experienced archivists from the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO)\, the session provides insights into building sustainable archives that reflect diverse experiences and narratives often marginalized in traditional records. \n\n\n\nPresented by Cristina Fontánez Rodríguez and Marcos Sueiro \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSecuring the Bag: Funding Projects & Writing Proposals\n\n\n\n2:30 PM – 4:15 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDesigned to empower cultural workers and community leaders\, this session explores effective strategies for identifying funding opportunities\, crafting compelling proposals\, and building relationships with funders. Featuring panelists with expertise in working directly with artists and organizations operating locally and nationally\, the discussion will shed light on practical approaches to financial resilience\, equity in resource allocation\, and long-term sustainability in the cultural sector. \n\n\n\nModerated by Alexis Ortiz. Panelists include Yara Liceaga\, Arnaldo López and Luis Marquez. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Role of Data for Cultural Institutions \n\n\n\n4:30 PM – 6:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event examines how data collection\, analysis\, and storytelling can drive informed decision-making\, enhance programming\, and secure funding. In a sector where resources are often limited\, understanding the power of data is key to demonstrating value and achieving long-term sustainability. Featuring panelists with experience in data-driven strategies for cultural organizations at local\, national\, and international levels\, the discussion will highlight innovative approaches to using metrics\, audience insights\, and digital tools to support missions rooted in equity and cultural preservation. \n\n\n\nModerated by Laura Colón Meléndez. Panelists include Patricia Mullaney-Loss\, Lucia Lagace and Libertad Guerra. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiasporican Cultural Summit Closing Reception\n\n\n\n6:00 PM – 8:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll are welcome to close out the Diasporican Cultural Summit and the semester at large with CENTRO. We’ll have good food\, good vibes\, and a live performance by Aurora & Zon del Barrio! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage produced by CENTRO Graphic Designer\, Brandon Chacon.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event has been made possible by the generous support of the United States Senate and House of Representatives (Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Representative Espaillat) and the New York City Council

SUMMARY:Afterlives of San Juan Hill: Lincoln Square/ San Juan Hill Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:In 1958\, an emerging Puerto Rican community was displaced from the Lincoln Square and San Juan Hill neighborhoods to make way for the construction of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Utilizing never before seen archival documents made available to CENTRO by the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts and other archival materials\, this exhibit delves into the larger Urban Renewal project and traces the process through which about 2\,000 Puerto Ricans were displaced. These records invite us to reframe existing narratives of dispossession and development in New York City in the mid 20th century as well as highlight the individual stories of Lincoln Square residents during this pivotal time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImage Source Attributed to NYC Parks’ Archived Collection\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event has been made possible by the generous support of the United States Senate and House of Representatives (Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Representative Espaillat) and the New York City Council

SUMMARY:Cafecito con... Glorimar Garcia: En tus manos/ En mi nombre
DESCRIPTION:The tradition of lacemaking in Puerto Rico spans many generations. Brought to the island by Spanish settlers\, the Puerto Rican bobbin lacemaking tradition\, called mundillo (which translates to “little world”) became an important economic activity for women across the archipelago. Artist Glorimar Garcia\, whose work is featured in Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survial of a People\, harnesses this tradition as a way of staying connected to Puerto Rico and to reflect upon the religious culture in which she was raised. She combines mundillo with her own family photographs and archival postcards to advertise Frank Espada’s traveling exhibitions of the “Puerto Rican Diaspora Documentary Project”. Join her and CENTRO Directora\, Dr. Yomaira Figueroa Vasquez for an intimate exploration of this delicate art form. \n\n\n\nDiasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People is on view at the Hunter East Harlem Gallery at the Silberman School of Social Work through September 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGlorimar Garcia with her mundillo pillow and lace samples winding bobbins at the Lacemakers’ Studio at Bard Graduate Center\, 2022. SUMMARY:(Partner Event) Performing the Bronx with Charles Rice-González & Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful Espejo Ovalles Morel / Queer presence in the Bronx
DESCRIPTION:Presented as part of Historias with The Clemente and as part of Performing the Bronx\n\nTo join this free experience and to received specific directions as to where to meet\, contact Nicolás at indioclaro@hotmail.com or click HERE \n\nSunday\, May 4\, 12 Noon\, 2025 \nMeet at BAAD! 2474 Westchester Avenue\nCharles Rice-González and Nicolás convene with a group to activate LGBTQ+ space – outdoors in the open –through writing. This event is co-shaped by all participants as a ritual that honors the queer Bronxites who have been here before and who have courageously inhabited our neighborhoods. Taking this as a point of inspiration\, all of those present give this experience tangible form through an altar in flux\, to be infused with the writings that emerge\, the devotions that arise\, and any other offerings to this impermanent socio-emotional sculpture. \n\nQueer presence in the Bronx continues to inform the cultures\, activisms and spirits of this part of New York City where many of those existing at the edges of society have played a central role in the struggle for social justice. Charles will guide us all into the herstories/theirstories/ourstories/histories whose roots run deep into the rich soil of our borough\, and which have allowed many of us to flower.\n\nWhat are the catalyst organizations\, groups and individuals – some no longer existing or alive in physical form – who must be remembered and their impetus invoked into our now? \n\nPlease bring a simple offering for the altar.\n\nFor directions to BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance click HERE\nThe closest train is the number 6 to Westchester Square in the Bronx. BAAD! and then walk a couple of blocks. \n \nCharles Rice-González\, born in Puerto Rico and reared in the Bronx\, is a writer\, long-time community and LGBTQ activist\, and co-founder of BAAD! The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance and an Associate Professor at Hostos Community College – CUNY. He received an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Goddard College. Website\n\nThis event will be documented through video and photographs. Those attending must be okay with this. \n\nTo join this gathering\, please contact Nicolás at indioclaro@hotmail.com or click HERE\n\nABOUT: PERFORMING THE BRONX\nSince 2015 Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful Espejo Ovalles Morel has invited a group of remarkable Bronxites to co-develop actions embedded in the day-to-day of our beloved home borough. The gestures that emerge are presented in private spaces\, as well as in the Bronx’s public realm\, and focus on the roots that weave these visionaries with specific communities and neighborhoods in our part of the City. Performing the Bronx is an expansion of Nicolás’s ongoing in honoring\, recovering\, reclaiming and remembering herstories/histories/theirstories of the area’s neighbors and trailblazers that run the risk of being effaced by time\, lost in the midst of neighborhoods in flux\, or dismissed by dominant discourses that often position themselves at the center of the conversation. \n\nPast participants: Arthur Avilés\, Bill Aguado\, Benny Bonilla\, Mili Bonilla\, Caridad De La Luz ‘La Bruja’\, Dr. Drum\, Ana ‘ROKAFELLA’ García\, Reverend Danilo Lachapel\, Wanda Salamán\, and Rhina Valentin\n\nPerforming the Bronx as a whole has been supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, Casita Maria’s South Bronx Culture Trail 2020\, and the Bronx Council on the Arts. It has also received love\, space and support from Mothers on the Move\, BronxNet TV\, The Andrew Freedman Home\, and BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance.\n\nThe 2025 chapters of Performing the Bronx with Lisa Ortega\, and Charles Rice-González are presented with support from Historias\, a multi-year programmatic initiative led by The Clemente in partnership with LxNY and supported by the Rauschenberg Foundation. Historias celebrates the transformative impact of Latinx communities in NYC through research\, artistic interpretations\, and public engagement.

SUMMARY:Archives\, Memory\, & the Present Past of Puerto Rico
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating our Rooted + Relational Research initiative with a symposium aimed at contending with the material and theoretical importance of the archive in contemporary scholarship and research practices. Through a day of panels\, the inaugural cohort of CENTRO research associates\, hybrid-fellows\, artists in residence\, and dissertation fellow will engage with contestation\, archival reckoning\, archival architecture\, facilities\, and accessibility\, and quotidian interventions and forms of archival refusal. Join us as we illuminate how CENTRO expands Puerto Rican studies and how we can best tend to its past and futures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors Open at 10 AM!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome & Opening Remarks by Director\n\n\n\n11:00 AM – 11:15 AM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanel 1 – Expanding Archival Methodologies \n\n\n\n11:15 AM – 12:30 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis panel will examine the future of Puerto Rican studies through the lens of archival research\, exploring how evolving methodologies can challenge existing frameworks and open new avenues for examination. Panelists will discuss the intersections between archival practices and decolonial scholarship\, considering how the archive can be used to rethink Puerto Rico’s past\, present\, and future. \n\n\n\nModerated by Vanessa Pérez-Rosario. Presentations by Daniel Morales-Armstrong\, Joaquín Villanueva\, Cristina Pérez Jiménez\, and Amanda Guzmán \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanel 2 – Contesting Archives & Authority \n\n\n\n12:45 PM – 2:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis panel will explore how the politics of ownership and access play out in archival spaces\, particularly when dealing with contested materials related to Puerto Rican history\, culture\, and politics. Discussions will center around how scholars and activists are challenging traditional notions of who has the right to control\, curate\, and narrate the archive. \n\n\n\nModerated by Cristel Jusino Díaz. Presentations by Shakti Castro\, Alberto Ortiz Díaz\, Emma Amador\, and Lorraine Torres Colón. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLunch and Community Microgrant Program Presentation\n\n\n\n2:00 PM – 3:30 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Rosa Cruz Cordero and Essah Diaz. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanel 3 – Archival Reckonings & Praxis\n\n\n\n3:30 PM – 4:45 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat happens when we contest or reject the dominant archival systems? This panel will focus on acts of resistance and refusal that take place in archival spaces by analyzing oral histories\, community-based records\, or alternative forms of knowledge. Panelists will discuss how these practices reshape the boundaries of the archive. \n\n\n\nModerated by Essah Diaz. Presentations by Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, Keishla Rivera-Lopez\, Karrieann Soto Vega\, and Xenia Rubinos. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote Presentation by Quiara Alegría Hudes\n\n\n\n5:00 PM – 6:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOffices of the Government of Puerto Rico in the United States (OGPRUS) Records. By recognizing the privilege of academics in universities and non-profit organizations\, the Afro Summit makes resources available to communities to form alliances\, establish networks\, and share historically invisibilized and marginalized experiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarch 21\, 2025 | CENTRO in El Barrio & via Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT IN-PERSON\, BUT YOU CAN JOIN US VIRTUALLY – SCROLL DOWN TO RSVP FOR THE VIRTUAL KEYNOTE! \n\n\n\nKeynote Presented by Vanessa Valdés | Conversation Featuring Yomaira Figueroa-Vásquez\, Joy Bivins\, and Vanessa Valdés\n\n\n\n6:00 PM – 8:00 PM | Hybrid\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Vanessa Valdés\, author of Diasporic Blackness: The Life and Times of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg\, kicks off CENTRO x Cumbre with a poignant keynote address based on her book which examines the life of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg through the lens of both Blackness and latinidad. After this keynote\, Valdés is joined by CENTRO Directora\, Dr. Yomaira-Figueroa-Vásquez\, and Schomburg Director\, Joy Bivins for a conversation building on the themes found in her book.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarch 22\, 2025 | CENTRO in El Barrio & via Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiasporic Memory Keepers: The Labor of Archiving & Counter Archival Practices \n\n\n\n10:00 AM – 11:15 AM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStart CENTRO x Cumbre with a timely panel featuring several stewards of archives responsible for maintaining black historical artifacts during a time where DEI initiatives and ethnic studies institutes are under attack. Listen as they share their responsibilities and experiences in the face of powerful institutions\, such as the US Archivist\, purportedly “sanitizing” exhibitions that may upset visitors and politicians. Our panelists from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture\, the Dominican Studies Institute\, The Haitian Studies Institute\, and CENTRO\, will discuss their historical counter-archival practices and the histories we tell that disrupt common narratives. How do these archival practices contend with the rise of AI\, a powerful tool in the revision of history\, and how can you bring these practices into your life? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLieu de Mémoire: Recalling and Responding: Ancestral Memory & Living History \n\n\n\n11:30 PM – 12:45 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSites of memory of the Black Diaspora are all over. From the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) in Harlem to Puerto Rican Organization for the Performing Arts (PROPA) in Orlando\, FL\, these places have been created to honor our histories. How do natural sites of memory compete with curated ones? How have these sites and their meaning changed over time with input from new historians and archivists? How are these spaces disrupted by gentrification and the commodification of these histories (i.e. weddings at plantations)? How do these black cultural organizations work together in East Harlem and beyond to help define our history and shape the present and future of Black Diasporic communities? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBlack Diasporic Photography\, Altaring\, & Spirit Practices\n\n\n\n1:15 PM – 2:15 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter a morning filled with insightful and thought provoking dialogues on the power and responsibility of archiving and maintaining our living history\, join us for lunch and a conversation between our featured artist for Cumbre Afro\, José Arturo Ballester Panelli and Diogenes Ballester. Their work will be featured in the lobby of the building and the auditorium lounge\, respectively.  \n\n\n\nJosé Arturo Ballester Panelli (Ballesta 9) is an Afro-Caribbean artist based in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  His work explores the connections between photography\, Afro-Caribbean aesthetics\, history and the racial\, social and ecological system in the Caribbean and its diasporas. \n\n\n\nDiogenes Ballester is a painter\, printmaker\, and teacher. His work combines organic elements and forms that might be considered part of a symbolic language created by the artist. It draws on references to history\, mythology\, spiritual and spiritualist rituals\, individual and collective memory\, oral history\, and Caribbean identity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNew Directions: Hemispheric Afro-Latine Studies from the Miriam Jiménez Román Postdoctoral Fellows at the Latinx Project at NYU\n\n\n\n2:30 PM – 3:45 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMiriam Jiménez Román was an Afro-Puerto Rican scholar\, activist\, and author on Afro-Latine culture. Her legacy is forever enshrined at the Latinx Project at NYU under the Miriam Jiménez Román Fellowship\, designed for post-doctoral candidates and junior scholars whose research advances the study of Afro-Latine communities in the U.S. This panel brings together the most recent recipients of this fellowship and asks the question: what questions does Afro-Latine scholarship seek to answer? Join us in exploring what upcoming projects we can expect from these up and coming scholars. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCafecito con… Mayra Santos Febres: La Otra Julia\n\n\n\n4:00 PM – 5:15 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMayra Santos-Febres is a Puerto Rican author\, poet\, novelist\, professor of literature\, essayist\, and literary critic and author of children’s books. Her work focuses on themes of race\, diaspora identity\, female sexuality\, gender fluidity\, desire\, and power. Her latest book\, La otra Julia (The Other Julia)\, a fictionalized account of the emblematic and controversial Julia de Burgos. What began as a simple assignment\, writing about Julia\, ends up as a map to understand the lives of so many Latin American authors\, including her own. Join Santos-Febres at Cumbre for a behind the scenes look into her latest book. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP for the In-Person CENTRO x Cumbre Symposium Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP for the Virtual CENTRO x Cumbre Keynote/ Symposium Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event has been made possible through the Mellon funded Rooted + Relational Research Initiative.

SUMMARY:Opening Night of Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico & the Survival of a People
DESCRIPTION:Join CENTRO on the opening night of Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People\, on view at the CENTRO Gallery in El Barrio from March 13th\, 2025 to September\, 2025. This exhibition honors Puerto Rican identities in the archipelago and its diasporas. The Puerto Rican diaspora can be understood as a collage of overlapping histories of colonialism\, resistance\, and survival\, and Diasporic Collage engages with collage as both practice and metaphor. Countering the concept of a melting pot\, which emphasizes assimilation and loss of culture\, the idea of a collaged community allows for the celebration of roots and relations. This exhibition also considers the close relationship between photography and collage\, both notable 20th-century art forms. It takes the first major documentary initiative on the Puerto Rican diaspora as a point of departure to examine the enduring legacy of survival and migration. The artists featured in this exhibition consider the Puerto Rican diaspora in a fluid and expansive way. While several focus on the diaspora in the traditional sense—Puerto Ricans who migrate to the United States—many honor the different diasporas that intersect with the archipelago of Puerto Rico\, documenting their communities with care and showing us a collage of Puerto Rican and Caribbean experiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Puerto Rican contingent of the Hispanic Festival\, San Francisco Bomba Collective\, San Francisco\, CA\, 1981\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event has been made possible through the Mellon funded Rooted + Relational Research Initiative.
