SUMMARY:(Partner Event) Black Cinemas in the Caribbean Basin: Expanding the Black Gaze
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Elena Martinez (Modern Languages and Comparative Literature\, Baruch College) and Dr. Rojo Robles (Black and Latino Studies\, Baruch College) for a discussion on the “Black Gaze” as a critical and political act of spectatorship. Often theorized within the context of African American cinema\, the Black Gaze challenges the whiteness of mainstream media\, fostering confrontation\, intimacy\, and accountability in portraying Black lives.\n\nThis event seeks to expand the concept of the Black Gaze beyond the US to the Caribbean basin and Latin America\, examining how affirming Black cinema in the region can provide an Afro-diasporic perspective of its societies and geographies. Key questions include: How can the Black Gaze engage with the visualities of the Caribbean basin? How are Latin American and Caribbean cinemas incorporating—or displacing—Blackness in their narratives? Explore Black cinema’s historical\, cultural\, and aesthetic dimensions and its role in reclaiming agency\, dignity\, and authenticity in storytelling across the diaspora.

SUMMARY:(Partner Event) Radical Sovereignties\, Radical Archives: The Archivo Histórico de Vieques
DESCRIPTION:Vulnerable communities enact sovereignties that decenter the state while strengthening relationships on which survival depends. This panel will delve into such radical praxis through a closer look at archiving and the Archivo Histórico de Vieques. The AHV is a community archive born out of the struggle against the U.S. Navy’s occupation of Vieques\, Puerto Rico (1940s-2003). In the early days\, it aimed to give voice to Viequenses and to counter the silences imposed by colonialism. Today\, the AHV continues to cultivate community-centered stories. Moreover\, it empowers community members to narrate history in their own terms and to\, through such enactment of narrative sovereignty\, chart out Viequense futures. This panel will accordingly address how archiving can be a praxis for narrative sovereignty that enables communities to reclaim their stories\, counteract historical erasures and assert control over their collective memory. Panelists include historians and archivist from the Puerto Rican archipelago and diaspora.

SUMMARY:Partner Event: ¡Oye! Puerto Rican Theater Breaks Through: Exhibit Opening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The 1970s marked a turning point in the history of Puerto Rican theater in New York City. A vibrant arts scene of Puerto Rican playwrights\, poets\, and actors emerged\, one that traversed the boroughs and neighborhoods of the city and influenced audiences from all cultural backgrounds. Groundbreaking\, contemporary works of art that focused on the stories of Puerto Ricans in New York City proliferated. Incisive plays\, such as Miguel Piñero’s Short Eyes and Eduardo Gallardo’s Simpson Street\, debuted\, and artist spaces\, like the now famed Nuyorican Poets’ Café\, were born and nurtured.\n \n\nThis marked a sharp distinction from the previous generation. In the 1950s\, during a post-war wave of migration from Puerto Rico to New York\, newly transplanted Puerto Rican artists were creating works that reflected life on their native island. Productions by and about Puerto Ricans focused on the stories of those Caribbean communities from their homeland. Two decades later\, a new perspective infused the plays and poetry by and about Puerto Ricans\, one that embraced the identity of Puerto Rican New Yorkers\, “Nuyoricans”\, and focused on the dynamics of life on the mainland for citizens from the island. This shift brought new artistic innovation and a thriving artistic community.\n\n\nJoin us as we explore the history of Puerto Rican theater in New York City in a conversation with leading artists and scholars\, in tandem with the new archives exhibit\, ¡Oye! Puerto Rican Theater Breaks Through\, on view in David Geffen Hall.\n\n \n\nModerator: Dr. Yomaira Figueroa-Vásquez (Director\, Center for Puerto Rican Studies/Hunter College)\n\nPanelists:\nDr. Karen Jaime (Associate Professor of Performing and Media Arts and Latina/o Studies\, Cornell University)\nCaridad de la Luz (Executive Director\, Nuyorican Poets Cafe)\nDr. Virginia Sánchez Korrol (Professor Emerita\, Department of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies\, Brooklyn College)
